Many people are finding that choosing the right light bulb has a steep learning curve. Buying a light bulb used to be a no-brainer. Now it’s a brain teaser; the transition to more energy-efficient lighting means choosing from a dazzling array of products. We’ve long identified bulbs by their wattage, but that is actually a measure of electricity, not the brightness of a bulb. The amount of light a bulb generates is measured in lumens. An incandescent 60-watt bulb, for example, gives off 800 lumens of light. And LED bulbs, which are more energy efficient than their incandescent counterparts, can deliver the same amount of light using as little as 10 watts. The Environmental Protection Agency says that if every household replaced just one incandescent bulb with an “Energy Star”-rated LED or CFL (compact fluorescent), Americans would save close to $700 million per year in energy costs. But with so many types of bulbs with different price points and...

Best kids’ shoe brands of 2019: Plae, TOMS, Keen, Adidas, Hush Puppies

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective. Finding the best shoes for your kids isn’t brain surgery, but it can still make your head hurt. This pair pinches their toes, that pair is too hard to put on, that one always falls off, and this one falls apart even before those ever-larger feet outgrow it. Even once you find a pair of comfortable, supportive shoes that your kid can get on and off with relative ease, you’ve only solved one part of the puzzle. Your kid can’t wear sneakers with a school uniform nor can they wear their dressy shoes in gym class. And you’re not going to send them off on a playdate with the same shoes they wore during the hike on Sunday, are you? No, you parents, you’re not looking for a pair of kids’ shoes, you’re looking for pairs aplenty. Do yourself a favor and do what my wife and I have learned to do: Once you find a brand of shoes that works for a certain activity — one that looks the part, tha...

The Top Pet Products of 2018 – Pet Business Magazine

The ability to offer a unique and innovative mix of products has always been a key competitive strength of pet stores. But as increased competition from online outlets and other retail channels have raised the stakes for these often relatively small retail operations, it has become more important than ever for pet store owners and operators to identify the latest and greatest merchandise to hit the market. With this in mind, Pet Business uses its annual Industry Recognition Awards as a platform to honor standout products across a variety of pet care categories. To find our award winners, the editors of Pet Business search through the hundreds of vendor press releases we receive each year, as well as the aisles of the industry’s major trade shows and even local pet store shelves to find the most exciting and functional products that the industry has to offer. Of course, with so much innovation coming out of the industry every year, this is never a simple task. However, the field has been narrowed, and without further ado, the winners of the 2018 Pet Business Industry Recognition Awards are… PetRageous Designs Eddie Bauer Collection Eddie Bauer PET dog apparel from PetRageous Desi...

Laser cutting metal is nothing new, but recently it’s becoming more and more accessible to the

Laser cutting metal is nothing new, but recently it’s becoming more and more accessible to the average hobbyist. Follow these simple guidelines to design your first laser cut metal part! In short, a laser is a focused beam of light, concentrating a lot of energy on a very small area. When this happens, material in front of a laser will burn, melt, or vaporize, making a hole. Add some CNC to that, and you get a machine that can cut or engrave very intricate parts made of wood, plastic, rubber, metal, foam, or other materials. Every material has its limitations and benefits when comes to a laser cutting. For instance, you may think that a laser can cut through anything, but that’s simply not the case. Not every material is suitable for laser cutting. That’s because every material requires a particular amount of energy to be cut. For example, the energy needed to cut through paper is a lot less than the energy needed for a 20-mm thick steel plate. Keep this in mind when buying a laser or ordering through a laser cutting service. Always check the laser’s power or at least what materials it can cut. As a reference, a 40-W laser can cut through paper, cardboard, foam, and thin ...

Thanks to an assortment of aftermarket kits, installing air conditioning in a street rod is something

Thanks to an assortment of aftermarket kits, installing air conditioning in a street rod is something that is easy to do for hands-on homebuilders, with one exception—making the necessary hoses. Generally the required hoses and the necessary ends are included, however those ends have to be crimped onto the hose to make a leak-free union. In most cases that means a trip to the local A/C installer, but there is another, more convenient, option from Eastwood: the Mastercool A/C Hose Crimp Set, PN 71550. The crimping kit comes with four sets of dies and is operated manually with a wrench. The sturdy construction and simple operation produces professional-looking, leak-free connections. As we are in the middle of installing A/C in two of our project cars we decided to order a crimp set and found it easy to use. It comes with the holding fixture assembly, die sets #6 (5/16 inch), #8 (13/32 inch), #10 (1/2 inch), #12 (5/8 inch), all in a molded storage case. The fixture can be bolted to a workbench (there are threaded holes in the base) or clamped in a vise. Removing the locking pin allows the fixture to open and change the dies that simply snap in place. PAG oil is used in the A/C sys...
