Deschutes libraries to put radio-frequency ID tags in all materials; Staff say the tags will ease check-in and out processes, increase security

By the end of 2019, every book, CD, DVD and audiobook in the Deschutes Public Library’s collection will have radio-frequency identification devices that library staff says will increase security and convenience for librarians and visitors. The library’s board of directors last week approved paying up to $416,872 to Australia-based FE Technologies to help put RFID tags on the approximately 300,000 items throughout the library system. These tags will be able to keep track of stolen or lost items, make for easier and more secure check-in and checkout and even let people check out items using an app on their phones. Library Director Todd Dunkelberg said these tags are already used by many other major library systems around the United States, like Hennepin County Library in Minnesota or Charlotte Mecklenburg Library in North Carolina. Emily O’Neal, the library system’s technical services manager, said every other library system she’s worked at has had RFID tags on items in their collections. She said the tags were crucial to protecting taxpayer dollars. Currently, there is no protection on the library’s collection. If someone walks out without checking out an item, it’s gone, and th...

Understanding reverse osmosis valve functionality in water treatment systems

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification process that removes impurities from water. Having clean water is essential for industrial applications. Boilers, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage and agriculture applications require pure water in their processes, and reverse osmosis is a common solution. To control the flow of water in these systems, valves are used. Depending on the complexity of the system, a variety of valves are used to accurately control the flow of the contaminated water purifying it into clean water. Osmosis is a naturally occurring phenomenon in nature when two solutions are separated by a semipermeable membrane. A semipermeable membrane allows certain molecules or ions to pass through it and prevents others from passing through — based on size and electrical charge. Figure 1 shows an example of freshwater (solvent) and salt water (concentrated solution). Naturally, the concentration of molecules attempts to equalize, which forces clean water through the semipermeable membrane to mix with the salt water. This force through the membrane is what is defined as the “osmotic pressure.” In reverse osmosis, a system aims to move a concentrated solution, such as ...

Kitchen sponges and cloths often just spread bacteria from one surface to another resulting in cross-contamination.

Kitchen sponges and cloths often just spread bacteria from one surface to another resulting in cross-contamination. Prevent bacteria from growing in your kitchen sponges and cloths by squeezing out as much water as possible between uses. This is important, because bacteria need moisture to grow. Bacteria will not be able to grow or survive in a dry sponge or cloth. The best way to get rid of bacteria in your kitchen sponge is to microwave it. According to research done by the Agricultural Research Service, you can get rid of 99.99999 percent of bacteria in a kitchen sponge by sanitizing it in a microwave oven. Here’s how to do it: Completely wet the sponge (non-metal only), and while still wet, microwave on high for 1 to 1½ minutes. Caution: Never put a dry sponge in the microwave—it could catch fire. Let the sponge cool before using to prevent burns. If you use a cloth instead of a sponge, the best way to clean and sanitize it is to wash in a washing machine using hot water and then thoroughly dry in the dryer. Wash kitchen cloths and towels often and always after wiping up raw meat, poultry and seafood spills, or after using them on the kitchen floor. Other methods are not nea...

Smart prospect for downsizers in Dublin 6 for €525k

The options for downsizers in Dublin’s more established suburbs who want to remain in their neighbourhood tend to be limited to apartments – that’s if there’s any choice at all. Not surprising then, that a two-bedroom house in Milltown, Dublin 6, recently renovated to a very exacting and stylish standard has already reached its asking price of €525,000 after just one week on the market. Number 2 Crannagh, Prospect Lane, ticks other boxes too, being a pretty looking terraced house, one of a small development of 15 set behind electric gates. The owners bought in 2013 and waited until 2017 to renovate – at which point they made the decision to entirely gut the house and reconfigure the interior. Now instead of two small rooms, the ground floor is open plan: kitchen to the rear opening via bifold doors to the town garden, living area to the front. Decorative detailing that pulls the traditional upscale look together includes the newly panelled white painted walls, chevron solid oak flooring and deep navy colour scheme, used on the custom built stairs and the kitchen units. A centre island in the kitchen – topped with gleaming white quartz – doubles as a breakfast bar with bespoke u...

Seth Pellegrin was 3 when he slipped out the back door of his babysitter’s house in Ville Platte while his mom picked up his little sister from her crib. A favorite toy, a basketball, was sitting in the fishing pond behind the house. It had just rained and the deck was slimy. “You could see where his two little feet had slipped,” said Joe Vining, his grandfather, recalling the 2010 accident. “If you read the stories, they’re all about the same … It’s a gathering, a kid sees something they want to go get. It happens so quick.” Like many other families, it was only after tragedy th...
