It’s finally Bag Week again! The most wonderful week of the year at TechCrunch. Just in time for back to school, we’re bringing you reviews of bags of all varieties: from backpacks to rollers to messengers to… The fanny pack. Or hip pack, waist bag, belt bag, sling, crossbody and sometimes bum bag, because where you’re from, a fanny means lady parts. Whatever it’s called, I’ve been searching for an all-around go-to alternative for purses. (I don’t care much for them since they don’t match my tee-shirt and holes-in-jeans aesthetic.) For the past two months, I’ve been trying out fanny packs (and trying to shove various objects into them) for different daily routines. I haven’t found one that gets the job done for everything, but here are a variety of great fannies. I own three Herschel backpacks, all of which have served me well for the past two years, so I was pretty stoked about this one. The only problem though, with my 5’4” wimpy frame, I should have opted for a smaller bag in their hip pack line. Although it’s smaller than Peak Design’s Everyday Sling, the side support makes it uncomfortable to wear across the chest and only works as a back sling or fanny pack. The fine peop...

The Gun Lock That A Child Can Open With A Paperclip

In 2010 a three-year-old child was killed because access was gained to a gun safe that contained a handgun. The little boy was the son of a Deputy Sheriff in Vancouver, Washington who had been issued the safe by his department. Unfortunately, that department knew nothing about how to analyze the security of gun safes so they had no idea of how easily that safe could be opened. I wrote about these events and the insecurity of many gun safe designs that were produced by different companies, including Stack-On Corporation, one of the largest supplier of safes in the country. I was also co-counsel in a Class Action lawsuit against the company for their defective security designs in several different safes that they sold. Not much has changed in the design of either gun safes or gunlocks since then. One of my colleagues, Dave Goetzinger, as the result of our findings in 2012, has studiously analyzed many different gun safes and gun locks, including cable locks that are produced under a federal grant and distributed to law enforcement agencies.  His web site should put every parent on notice of the security flaws in many of the safes that are being sold today, and represented as secu...

The NGV is accustomed to its Design Store selling out of blockbuster exhibition merchandise – the Escher-inspired tea towels, terracotta warrior tote bags – but its upcoming KAWS show is likely to eclipse anything that’s come before. KAWS: Companionship in the Age of Loneliness is the first Australian exhibition for American artist KAWS – real name Brian Donnelly – and it will likely have already sold out of exhibition merch by the time you read this. A former street artist, KAWS sits in something of a unique artistic space, commanding as much respect from millionaire collectors as he does from millennial students; one of his paintings sold for $22 million at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong earlier this year (despite an initial estimate of about $1.5 million), but his limited run T-shirts retail at about $14. And his high-street offerings bring out the same rabid competitiveness as the high-end auctions. His June collaboration for Japanese fashion retailer Uniqlo – a line of T-shirts for adults, one for children and a series of tote bags – caused a frenzy in one shopping centre in China, with crowds gathering ahead of the special midnight o...

600,000 GPS trackers for people and pets are using 123456 as a password

An estimated 600,000 GPS trackers for monitoring the location of kids, seniors, and pets contain vulnerabilities that open users up to a host of creepy attacks, researchers from security firm Avast have found. The $25 to $50 devices are small enough to wear on a necklace or stash in a pocket or car dash compartment. Many also include cameras and microphones. They’re marketed on Amazon and other online stores as inexpensive ways to help keep kids, seniors, and pets safe. Ignoring the ethics of attaching a spying device to the people we love, there’s another reason for skepticism. Vulnerabilities in the T8 Mini GPS Tracker Locator and almost 30 similar model brands from the same manufacturer, Shenzhen i365 Tech, make users vulnerable to eavesdropping, spying, and spoofing attacks that falsify users’ true location. Researchers at Avast Threat Labs found that ID numbers assigned to each device were based on its International Mobile Equipment Identity, or IMEI. Even worse, during manufacturing, devices were assigned precisely the same default password of 123456. The design allowed the researchers to find more than 600,000 devices actively being used in the wild with that password. As...

Manipulating genetic material through genetic engineering creates genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional cross-breeding methods Manipulating genetic material through genetic engineering creates genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional cross-breeding methods Africa a continent once blessed with vast natural habitat providing natural resources foods and medicinal plants, fresh waters, minerals with a rich history cultural heritage and hospitable people has been reduced to a continent laden with wars, suffering, impoverishment, greed and a multitude of diseases. And now, Africa is being confronted with yet another seemingly sweet but bitter package of GMOs but only designed to compound the current problems Africa is grappling with. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) are a result of laboratory processes where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into genes of an unrelated plant or animal. The foreign genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even humans. GMO’s can also be described as living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engi...

So intent is the company on not pitching this car as a hot hatch, that it

So intent is the company on not pitching this car as a hot hatch, that it doesn’t even quote its top speed or 0-100km/h acceleration figures. It refers to this Corsa as a “sport luxury car with a powertrain which focuses on everyday driving needs”. “Opel is pioneering this new trend by gently distancing the new GSi badge from its historical pure performance roots,” says the press release. Hmm, that might be a tough nut to crack given how GSi has become a synonym for speed ever since the glory days of the Opel Kadett GSi that raced in Group N in the 1980s and 1990s. I reckon it would have been easier to give this Corsa a different moniker, and reserve GSi for an Opel with more passion in its pants than a 1.4l turbo engine with outputs of 110kW and 220Nm. This is the same engine that powered the now-discontinued Corsa 1.4T Sport model, and that was a car I liked because it didn’t pretend to be anything it wasn’t and offered good bang for the buck with its R290,000 pricetag. The new Corsa GSi has the same engine, is dressed up with a sporty body kit, fancy Recaro seats and rock-hard suspension, and sells for R365,900. There’s the rub. In fairness there is a feel-good factor to driv...

For No Discernible Reason, Arizona High School Coach Leaked Team Strategies To Opponents

A high school football and basketball coach in Arizona resigned Friday after a Tempe Union High School District investigation found that he had shared game strategies, play calls and information about player eligibility with several opposing coaches for at least two years, according to the Ahwatukee Foothills News. Justin Hager had coached Mountain Pointe High School’s girls basketball team and served as an assistant for the school’s football team since 2016. In that time, he reportedly sent hundreds of emails containing privileged information on the football and boys basketball team to other coaches, all from the terrific email address walterpayton12@yahoo.com. Per the emails released by the school, Hager sent PDFs of plays and defensive schemes to at least eight opposing coaches until—perhaps because this seemed remarkably like an episode of the hidden camera show What Would You Do?—the head football coach at Faith Lutheran in Las Vegas finally said something. “Sir…I don’t believe in cheating,” he responded to walterpayton12 on Aug. 21. “We are not looking to gain an unfair advantage. We will prepare as best we can and look to have a great competitive game.” When the teams me...

iPhone 11 review roundup: The iPhone most people should buy

With an affordable starting price of $699 and a slew of upgraded features, the iPhone 11 is arguably Apple’s most compelling smartphone. Don’t just take our word for it; several reviews of the iPhone 11 are out today, and they all seem in agreement: The iPhone 11 is the iPhone most people should buy. Here’s what people had to say. Last year’s iPhone XR has a single camera, and the iPhone 11 gets an upgrade to a dual-camera setup. But this isn’t just a straight port of the iPhone XS camera. Wired said the iPhone 11′s camera doesn’t produce remarkable results but praised the Camera app’s simplicity: It would be a stretch to say that the camera on the iPhone 11 has wowed me or has set a new standard that other phone makers will have to race to match. The iPhone 11 Pro, with its funky three-lens camera module on the back, is noticeably better. But one area where Apple deserves credit is in the overall packaging of its camera features and the design of the app’s interface. Smartphones are now cluttered with so many features that it can be hard to figure out what’s what, which can actively discourage people from trying all th...

You’ve spent months on real estate websites and toured dozens of properties. You’ve finally found the right house in the right location for the right price… You’ve spent months on real estate websites and toured dozens of properties. You’ve finally found the right house in the right location for the right price and your offer has been accepted. Now you have to select the method to finance your purchase, and for most first-time buyers there are two main options – an FHA or a conventional mortgage. An FHA loan is guaranteed by the Federal Housing Administration, part of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). If you qualify for an FHA mortgage, the U.S. government guarantees to the lender that the loan will be repaid. The loan has some advantages and disadvantages for the borrower. The first is that it is easier to qualify for an FHA loan than it is a conventional mortgage. Because it is a program to encourage homeownership, and the government stands behind the loan, a borrower may qualify with less than perfect credit. While overall lending requirements are much tighter in the wake of the housing crash, FHA requirements are a bit less ...

This young artist pursues both passion and profit by painting on bags

MANILA — Choosing between the desire to pursue their passion and the need for a stable well-paying job is perhaps every millenial’s dilemma. Let’s face it, for the generation known for jumping from one job to another, having both remains to be a distant dream.  Ira Balmes, founder and sole artist of Martini, an online shop that specializes in customized handpainted bags, however, is one of the lucky few able to turn that dream into reality. The innovative entrepreneur was able to capitalize on her talent by using stylish bags as her canvas and painting on them what folks across generations deem priceless — their pets.  “For the aspirants who are being clouded by the thought that the art industry is only profitable for the select few, I have to say, you only need to find value in your art and then make your art valuable,” Balmes declared.  While Balmes admitted she was inseperable to the paint brush since she was a child, the painter never imagined she could build a business with it. “I had no formal education in the arts but have always spared some weekends just painting my heart out… In hindsight, those weekends I would paint on r...
