Norway-based aluminum producer Hydro says it has “virtually doubled” the number of extrusion sites it operates that have attained Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) certification. With 15 more production sites having achieved the certification, Hydro says it is nearing its goal of having all its aluminum extrusion operations in Europe certified to the ASI Performance Standard. The Material Stewardship section of the ASI standard says companies seeking the standard must “take a life cycle perspective and promote resource efficiency, collection and recycling of aluminum within its operation, as well as within the value chain.” Hydro says it now has 31 aluminum extrusion and fabrication facilities that are ASI certified. Of the 15 new sites, four are in France, four are in Spain, four are in the United Kingdom, two are in Poland and one is in Portugal. “Many people have put a lot of work into this,” says Hydro Executive Vice President Egil Hogna. “I am very pleased, but we need to keep moving forward with ASI certification because we are seeing requirements that we didn’t see before. If you own one of several affected graphics cards, you can get it modified for brand new mounting screws at no cost. In a recent post on its website, Asus announced that it has addressed the concerns over thermal performance and cooler mounting pressure with its RX 5700-series graphics cards. As Asus explained, it produced initial runs of the ROG Strix Radeon RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT graphics cards according to AMD’s guidelines. Normally, AMD recommends a PSI (pound-force per square inch) between pressure and temperature of 30-40. But not too long after the products shipped, Asus received some complaints from users about temperature issues. So, Asus redesigned the mounting screws to “increase cooler mounting pressure to 50-60 PSI, resulting in improved heat transfer from the GPU to the heatsink.” Essentially, these new screws increase the amount of force the heatsink physically puts onto the GPU itself. The greater force of contact means a better ‘seal,’ so more heat can be transferred to the heatsink efficiently. The final results from the ESA satellite LISA Pathfinder (LPF) have been published today. Using data taken before the end of the mission in July 2017, the LPF team – including researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Hannover and Leibniz Universität Hannover – significantly improved first results published in mid 2016. Because the compressor’s discharge temperature is superheated, a pressure-temperature relationship does not exist and it must be read directly on the discharge line by some sort of temperature-measuring device. The compressor’s discharge temperature should be measured about 1 to 2 inches away from the compressor on the discharge line. This discharge temperature should never exceed 225°F. Carbonization and oil breakdown can occur if compressor discharge temperatures exceed 225°. When the condensing temperature is high, the compressor must compress the refrigerant from the low-side (evaporating) pressure to an elevated high-side (condensing) pressure. This added work done by the compressor would raise the heat of compression. Thus, the compressor’s discharge temperature will be higher. Remember, condensing temperature is the temperature the refrigerant is as it changes from a vapor to a liquid in the condenser. There is a pressure-temperature relationship with the condensing temperature because of the phase change.
